Top Healthcare Equipment Stocks To Watch Right Now

Darden shares jumped 2.2% higher after the restaurant operator announced it would get out of the kitchen and meet investors personally, cancelling its March 28 Investor Day.

Bloomberg

The jump recoups just a fraction of the losses earlier this week, after embattled Darden missed third-quarter expectations and made a disappointing fourth-quarter forecast, and repeated its plans to sell or spin off its Red Lobster chain, which some people don think goes far enough to reverse the stock decline owing to slumping sales.

Two investors are pushing for strategic changes including a spinoff of Olive Garden and Red Lobster as a single company, and the creation of a REIT. A spinoff of Red Lobster by itself, which owns half the company real estate, would obviously hurt any REIT initiative. (Darden other restaurants include LongHorn Steakhouse and Bahama Breeze).

Exchange-traded funds offer a convenient way to invest in sectors or niches that interest you. If you'd like to add some small dividend-paying stocks to your portfolio but don't have the time or expertise to hand-pick a few, the WisdomTree SmallCap Dividend ETF (NYSEMKT: DES  ) could save you a lot of trouble. Instead of trying to figure out which companies will perform best, you can use this ETF to invest in lots of them simultaneously.

    The basics
ETFs often sport lower expense ratios than their mutual fund cousins. The WisdomTree ETF's expense ratio -- its annual fee -- is a rather low 0.38%. It recently yielded more than 3%.

This ETF has performed well, beating the S&P 500 over the past three and five years. As with most investments, of course, we can't expect outstanding performances in every quarter or year. Investors with conviction need to wait for their holdings to deliver.

Dentsu paid 3.16 billion pounds ($4.8 billion) for Aegis as Japan biggest agency competes with global firms including WPP Plc (WPP) and Omnicom Group Inc. (OMC) With Japan benchmark Topix index on pace for its best result since 2005, the 112-year-old company is tapping an equities boom to fund the deal that added the largest independent buyer of advertising space and reduced its reliance on the domestic market.

In the second half of the year, Crescent established new positions in a few companies that have more such global footprints. We initiated investments in Google (GOOG), as well as the advertising agencies Interpublic (IPG) and WPP (WPP). The fortunes of all three are tied directly to the level of global advertising spend, and they all saw their shares prices decline due to concerns of a recession-related slowdown. At our purchase price, we believe we were buying each at roughly 11-13x our estimated earnings for 2012 should the fears of a macroeconomic slowdown prove correct. This strikes us as a very reasonable multiple to pay for asset-light global businesses that generate strong free cash flow across the business cycle and have the capability to grow earnings greater than GDP in a normal economic environment.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Chris Neiger]

Corning (NYSE: GLW  ) recently released its first-quarter results and although earnings were higher than expected, revenues fell short. The company is in a solid position in the display technology field and enjoys some hefty margins in the sector, but the glaring problem for Corning is its lack of materialized potential and its overdependence on display technologies.
