Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT ) is more than just fighter jets. It's also, apparently, a bona fide crime fighter.
On Tuesday, the world's largest pure-play defense contracting firm announced that it has just deployed Increment 3 of the FBI's Next Generation Identification fingerprinting system. NGI is said to give the FBI "significant improvement in latent fingerprint search accuracy and a new nationwide palm print identification system to help solve cold cases and improve crime-solving capabilities."
Lockheed is upgrading the FBI's biometric identification capabilities in a series of "phased upgrades." This latest, Increment 3, involves adding "powerful matching algorithms" to the bureau's computers to improve, by as much as three times, investigators' ability to match suspect fingerprints with those in the FBI's database. Additionally, for the first time ever, Increment 3 gives the FBI the ability to search for palm prints on a national database.
News of the success helped to allay lingering concerns about the effect of defense spending sequestration on the defense contractor -- and helped to add 1.2% to Lockheed's stock price in Wednesday trading. Lockheed shares closed at $104.05.

The aerospace industry has received another blow with the crash of an Eurocopter AS350 in Seattle, on March 18. However, the episode had no repercussions on the stock market. The Company has manufactured a total of 33 Aircranes for its own use and for sale to customers, and has sold one for domestic construction operations and eight for international firefighting operations. It also builds and manufactures Aircranes for its own use and owns, operates, and maintains 17 Aircranes. As the owner of the S-64 Type and Production Certificates, it also has the authority and ability to manufacture an Aircrane entirely from new parts. It manufactures aluminum main and tail rotor blades and have partnered with OEMs to design and manufacture composite main rotor blades. While it provides MRO services to its own Aircranes, it continues to provide parts and maintenance and overhaul services to every Aircrane it has sold. It also performs similar operations on engines and other components for owners of other aircraft platforms. Its FAA-certificated repair station offers an array of services from small repairs to extensive heavy airframe maintenance.

Currently, three main companies supply security equipment to the TSA - Safran (SAFRY.PK), Smiths (SMGKF.PK), and Level-3 Holdings (LLL). All three of these companies sell the whole range of their products to the TSA, with an ETD offering included. Recently, however, a new company, Implant Sciences Corporation (IMSC.PK) received approval from the TSA to begin selling their ETD equipment to airport security professionals. This approval has opened the door for IMSC to begin taking some market share away from the more established players in the US and beyond.
