Is this the beginning of the end for biotechnology seed companies Monsanto (NYSE: MON  ) , Syngenta (NYSE: SYT  ) , and DuPont (NYSE: DD  ) ? I know this doesn't help the recent string of negative publicity, but it actually isn't nearly as bad as it sounds. In fact, the world's agriculture industry is doing remarkably well at the 1 billion acre mark, compared with the early doomsday predictions of the critics. This is nowhere near a global epidemic, either: The resistance problem is isolated to localized regions. Luckily, the industry has already come up with a solution that will reverse its spread and minimize future occurrences.

Not every crop is so protected. BetweenMonsanto,DuPont (NYSE: DD  ) , andSyngenta (NYSE: SYT  ) -- the "three sisters" of GMO seeds -- theycontrol 53% of the world's seed production, yet their control of our food supply is almost universal because of their cross-licensingagreements among themselves and with others, like Dow Chemical (NYSE: DOW  ) .

Shares of energy crop developer Ceres (NASDAQ: CERE  ) surged more than 100% from the opening bell Monday to early trading on Thursday. In fact, over one-third of the total outstanding shares traded hands on Thursday. Even with the move the company is trading for "only" $100 million. With some of the biggest names in industrial biotech on its side -- such as Syngenta (NYSE: SYT  ) , Petrobras, Amyris, Valero, Novozymes, Gruppo M&G, and Mascoma, to name a few -- this must be a good buy right? Not so fast.

The two largest holdings in the MOO portfolio are Monsanto (MON) and Swiss-based Syngenta (SYT). Both of these companies are leaders in the biotech aspect of agriculture and produce pesticides as well as pesticide-resistant seeds.

General Electric's (GE) Oil & Gas division is on fire and growing much faster than the rest of the company. Yet it is such a small part of the company, its valuation is being diluted by GE's other businesses. However, the company has a cash hoard and CEO Jeff Immelt has spoken frequently about his desire to grow the industrial base while reducing the size of GE Capital. As a result, the best way to invest in GE Oil's & Gas business may be to invest companies which GE is likely to takeover. Two likely candidates are the Dresser Rand Corp. (DRC) and Dril-Quip (DRQ).
