Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By WWW.GURUFOCUS.COM]

During the quarter, Visa (V) reported strong year-颅ver-颅ear growth with earnings up 14%, as the business continues to operate at a superior level very much in-颅ine with the past several years. Visa has been a core holding for our clients since October 2008 and rarely has a year gone by without the Company and its partners having to contend with lawsuits and legislation aimed at limiting pricing power and 4 distribution. 2014 is no exception, though most of the news has been favorable, with a ruling for "no change" to Visa's exclusivity for high-颅alue signature transactions. We continue to see Visa's pricing power as being derived from VisaNet's superior value proposition relative to substitutes, particularly paper-颅based payments, automated clearinghouse (ACH), and more recently, "cryptocurrencies" (e.g. Bitcoin). While these emerging payment platforms, including PayPal and Square, represent very legitimate substitutes to traditional interchange, in our view they are not quite "good enough," as evidenced by merchant acceptance that is largely sequestered to small businesses. While we have been net sellers of Visa over the past 18 months, it has been solely due to valuation our primary tool for risk management at Wedgewood. We believe Visa will continue to maintain its superior competitive positioning, as competitors find it difficult to achieve the network-颅ffect benefits that have compounded the value proposition of VisaNet, particularly as acceptance and issuance of the Visa brand continues to expand. From David Rolfe (Trades, Portfolio)'s Wedgewood Partners first quarter 2014 commentary.

But it hard to fight against this kind of big negativity, or the fact that other stocks like Chevron (CVX) or U.K.-based BP (BP) look like better bargains based on forward earnings projections and current valuations.

    For comparison's sake
Compare those tax payments and percentages with those of Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) , which, from a market capitalization perspective, is larger than ExxonMobil. The California technology superstar paid income taxes of about $4 billion in 2011, an effective rate of just 24.6%. And McDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) , which checked in at 25th place on the list of "elite" taxpayers, forked over $2.1 billion in taxes. Its effective rate: 31.3%.

Philip Morris International (NYSE: PM  ) will release its quarterly report on Thursday, and projections suggest that it will manage to deliver decent results for investors. But shareholders don't seem convinced about Philip Morris earnings, as they've recently sent the stock down substantially from its May highs.

GuruFocus: Youe buying a lot of global brands, and they all had in common emerging market growth, like Proctor and Gamble (PG), Pepsi (PEP), Philip Morris (PM), Johnson and Johnson (JNJ). Is that was a conscious investment theme or is that a coincidence?

Russia's move could pose a threat to global cigarette producers such as Philip Morris International (NYSE: PM  ) and British American Tobacco. Although both tobacco producers operate around the globe, a dramatic shift in curbing smoking from the world's third-largest tobacco consumer is bound to sting. In Philip Morris' case, according to Trefis, Russia accounted for approximately 6% of its total revenue last year, and the Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa region accounted for roughly one-quarter of sales.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Lately, Johnson & Johnson has presented two different faces to investors. On one hand, the company has faced the challenge of dealing with a weak consumer-products business, as multiple recalls and close regulatory oversight of its production facilities have exacerbated J&J's problems. With its more focused consumer-goods business, Colgate-Palmolive (NYSE: CL  ) has worked harder at taking advantage of international growth opportunities than many of its rivals, and Colgate's strong overseas sales, in comparison to J&J's international weakness, show the effectiveness of that strategy. In particular, Asia has been a focus point for Colgate, with revenue from the region having risen 9% year over year compared with less than 3% growth overall. Moreover, Latin America represents Colgate's biggest region for sales, with more than half again the revenue its U.S. segment produces.

Despite a shaky start to 2013, Apple (AAPL) has been on a tear since the summer. I've been a fan of the stock for a while now too -- and I've still have a position in AAPL shares. After spending November in sideways-mode, AAPL looks ready to move higher again.

After moving up close to 20% off of September's swing low, Apple has been consolidating sideways in a rectangle pattern. The rectangle is a price setup that's formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares at $535, and another horizontal support level down at $510. The rectangle gets its name because it essentially "boxes in" shares. The high-probability trade comes when Apple exits its channel – a move through $535 is a buy signal.

Apple's relative strength, a measure of this stock's performance versus the broad market, has been on fire for the last six months. From a statistical standpoint, an uptrend in RS is a very good indication that shares will continue to do well in the medium-term.

    I'm holding on from here.

Including Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) iOS and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) Android, there are now effectively four platforms. Mead notes, "Three to four operating systems is good for the industry and good for us." Since the iPhone carries the priciest subsidies, Mead also points out that reducing subsidy costs is an "active area" for the No. 1 wireless carrier.

That competition? A combination of Pandora (P), Spotify, iTunes and, more broadly, mobile Internet. Apple (AAPL) and iTunes has been around for a while, as has Pandora, and neither has been able to unseat Sirius XM as the king of portable audio. As of this year, however, most mobile phones in the United States are web-enabled smartphones, which can largely accomplish the same thing Sirius XM receivers accomplish (yet are far more portable and flexible than satellite radio receivers). Mobile broadband is becoming prolific too, and it’s even more portable than satellite radio.
