Best Asian Companies To Buy For 2014

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) is basically unchanged after China reported a trade surplus in April. Alcoa (NYSE: AA  ) stock is up on the news, as a stronger Chinese economy means more demand and higher prices for aluminum. As of 1:15 p.m. EDT, the Dow was up 11 points to 15,067. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) was up four points to 1,630.

There were no U.S. economic releases today. China reported that its exports grew 14.7% in April, above March's 10% rise, which was enough to swing China back to having a trade surplus. In March, China surprised investors after it reported an $884 million trade deficit, increasing investors' fears of a slowdown in China. April's growth in exports led China to report a trade surplus of $18.16 billion. If the numbers are accurate, this is a good sign for China's economy; however, some analysts are questioning whether the numbers are too good to be true. The growth in exports is in contrast to the HSBC purchasing managers index, which showed that new export orders dropped during the month. That said, Asian markets are up nearly 1% on the news.

I know on the surface that Venaxis Inc. (NASDAQ:APPY) hasn't exactly been the most riveting of stocks lately. Heck, APPY shares are exactly where they were at the end of July, and volume has been even less than minimal. It was a stock I dissected just two days ago (on Tuesday - here's that chat), pointing out how all the telltale signs of bullishness were brewing. Sure enough, APPY popped on Wednesday, and as a result has gone from a mere potential big mover to an actual mover.

Linda Davidson/The Washington Post via Getty ImagesShoppers at the Tanger Outlet Mall in Oxon Hill, Md. There are few forms of shopping I enjoy more than outlet shopping. There is something about all of those discount stores packed so closely together that makes me super excited! But I am not going to tell you that all outlet stores are a good deal, because some of them are not. Also, brands sometimes create cheaper items to sell specifically in their outlet locations, and those are not always a smart buy. But for the most part, outlet malls are still an excellent way to save some money while picking up items for the entire family. Here are five ways to make the most of your trip to an outlet: 1. Figure out the outlet 'brand.' There are a couple of management companies that own quite a few outlet malls in the United States, including Premium Outlets (SPG) and Tanger Factory Outlet Centers (SKT). Before heading out, be sure to check the website for the entire outlet mall for any possible deals or coupons. Premium and Tanger Outlets also have Facebook (FB) pages where they will occasionally post coupons that you can print from home. 2. Look for an outlet discount card or VIP program. Many outlet malls have VIP savings programs that can save you big bucks throughout the year and also give you special access to new promotions and sales. The Fashion Outlets of Chicago opened last year and offer a Green Savings Card that costs $5 for a yearly membership. Those with a Green Savings Card receive extra discounts at a huge number of stores and restaurants in the mall, which is on top of the already low prices. 3. 'Like' the outlet store on Facebook. If there is an outlet store that you frequent, go ahead and like its Facebook page so that you will be one of the first to know about sales and promotions. The Kate Spade Outlet (KATE) will frequently post promotions to Facebook before emailing subscribers. The J. Crew Factory Store has offered special promotions th

Best Recreation Stocks For 2014

Las Vegas is easily America's city that is most synonymous with recreational risk-taking. Atlantic City, especially for those on the East Coast, has also long been known as a place to take a chance on blackjack or drop coins in a slot machine. But in truth, the United States is dotted with gambling havens from coast to coast. With tax rates up to 40%, these businesses can generate hundreds of millions in state revenues.

We decided to look at the states with the most revenue from commercial gambling in 2012. Some of the 13 states that made our list won't surprise you. Others, such as Iowa, may.

The numbers do not include tribal gaming, because The National Indian Gaming Association does not publish state-by-state revenue, though revenue on all Native lands combined was $27 billion in 2013. Including all of the money tribal casinos generate would place California and Connecticut among the top markets for gambling in the U.S., and onto this list.

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Tornier (Nasdaq: TRNX  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Tornier doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, pretty well. Trailing-12-month revenue increased 7.3%, and inventory increased 5.8%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks decent. Revenue increased 11.0%, and inventory grew 5.8%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks healthy. Revenue grew 4.6%, and inventory dropped 2.7%.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rich Duprey]

Considering the work stoppages and violent clashes that have become the norm at South African precious-metals mines, perhaps the miners were wondering exactly what they were getting for their money. An expose by South Africa's Daily Maverick has uncovered a system where miners such as AngloGold Ashanti (NYSE: AU  ) and BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP  ) surreptitiously paid for the salaries of the heads of the local mining unions to keep the mine workers in line, and it's only because the miners sought to end the "uncomfortable arrangement" with the unions that the matter came to light.

    Anglogold Ashanti Limited (AU)

Down 65% over 12 months, Anglogold Ashanti Limited has a market cap of $4.85 billion, and trades with a P/E of 8.10.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

We've seen the flip side of that trend play out in recent years, as rock-bottom interest rates in the U.S. have encouraged investment in higher-yielding income investments in places like Australia, Brazil, and South Africa. Interest from foreign investors got to be so extensive in Brazil that the federal government imposed a tax on foreign investors in bonds in order to curb demand and slow the pace of the Brazilian real's appreciation. Exchange-rate issues also likely played a role in the health of the commodities markets, as mining giants BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP  ) and Rio Tinto (NYSE: RIO  ) in Australia benefited from increased demand largely for base metals. Similarly, South African gold miners AngloGold Ashanti (NYSE: AU  ) and Gold Fields (NYSE: GFI  ) outperformed rivals from elsewhere in the world, benefiting from strength in the South African rand currency.

  • [By Mark Hulbert]

If you prefer the shares of individual gold-mining companies, Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) is currently the one most recommended by the Hulbert Financial Digest-monitored advisers who have beaten the S&P 500 over the past 15 years. Also popular are Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) , Barrick Gold (ABX) , AngloGold Ashanti (AU) and Newmont Mining (NEM) .

    Bursting with paw-tential
No stock goes straight up, but between 2009 and 2014 it was a steep uphill ride for stakeholders in animal health products companyMWI Veterinary Supply (NASDAQ: MWIV  ) , who saw their shares rise in value by more than 700%. Pet-related companies are highly sought after
Having said that, it would appear that in comparison to the rest of the pet-related sector, Zoetis is fairly valued. Peer MWI Veterinary Supply (NASDAQ: MWIV  ) trades at 27 times forward earnings, and again the company is highly defensive, engaging in the distribution of animal health products to veterinarians in the United States and the United Kingdom. Veterinary supply is exposed to the same demand factors as Zoetis -- greater demand for animal treatments will lead to more demand for the distribution of animal health products.

10 Best Freight Stocks To Buy For 2014: Con-way Inc (CNW)

Con-way Inc. (Con-way), incorporated in 1958, provides transportation, logistics and supply-chain management services for a wide range of manufacturing, industrial and retail customers. Con-way business units operate in regional and transcontinental less-than-truckload and full-truckload freight transportation, contract logistics and supply-chain management, multimodal freight brokerage, and trailer manufacturing. Con-way is divided into four segments: Freight, Logistics, Truckload, and Other. At December 31, 2011, Con-way Freight operated 286 freight service centers, of which 144 were owned and 142 were leased. At December 31, 2011, Con-way Freight owned and operated approximately 9,200 tractors and 26,400 trailers, including tractors held under capital lease agreements.

The Freight segment consists of the operating results of the Con-way Freight business unit. Con-way Freight is a less-than-truckload (LTL) motor carrier that utilizes a network of freight service centers to provide day-definite regional, inter-regional and transcontinental less-than-truckload freight services throughout North America. LTL carriers transport shipments from multiple shippers utilizing a network of freight service centers combined with a fleet of line-haul and pickup-and-delivery tractors and trailers. Freight is picked up from customers and consolidated for shipment at the originating service center. Freight is consolidated for transportation to the destination service centers or freight assembly centers. At Freight assembly centers, freight from various service centers can be reconsolidated for transportation to other freight assembly centers or destination service centers. From the destination service center, the freight is delivered to the customer. Typically, LTL shipments weigh between 100 and 15,000 pounds. In 2011, Con-way Freight average weight per shipment was 1,305 pounds.

The Logistics segment consists of the operating results o! f the Menlo Worldwide Logistics business unit. Menlo Worldwide Logistics develops contract-logistics solutions, which can include managing complex distribution networks, and providing supply-chain engineering and consulting, and multimodal freight brokerage services. Menlo Worldwide Logisticssupply-chain management offerings are primarily related to transportation-management and contract-warehousing services. Transportation management refers to the management of asset-based carriers and third-party transportation providers for customersinbound and outbound supply-chain needs through the use of logistics management systems to consolidate, book and track shipments. Contract warehousing refers to the optimization and operation of warehouses for customers using technology and warehouse-management systems to reduce inventory carrying costs and supply-chain cycle times. For several customers, contract-warehousing operations include light assembly or kitting operations.

Menlo Worldwide Logistics provides its services using a customer- or project-based approach when the supply-chain solution requires customer-specific transportation management, single-client warehouses, and/or single-customer technological solutions. However, Menlo Worldwide Logistics also utilizes a shared-resource, process-based approach that leverages a centralized transportation-management group, multi-client warehouses and technology to provide scalable solutions to multiple customers. Additionally, Menlo Worldwide Logistics segments its business based on customer type. At December 31, 2011, Menlo Worldwide Logistics operated 76 warehouses in North America, of which 55 were leased by Menlo Worldwide Logistics and 21 were leased or owned by clients of Menlo Worldwide Logistics. Outside of North America, Menlo Worldwide Logistics operated an additional 63 warehouses, of which 48 were leased by Menlo Worldwide Logistics and 15 were leased or owned by clients. Menlo Worldwide Logistics owns and operates a small fleet of tr! actors an! d trailers to support its operations, but primarily utilizes third-party transportation providers for the movement of customer shipments.

The Truckload segment consists of the operating results of the Con-way Truckload business unit. Con-way Truckload is a full-truckload motor carrier that utilizes a fleet of tractors and trailers to provide short- and long-haul, asset-based transportation services throughout North America. Con-way Truckload provides dry-van transportation services to manufacturing, industrial and retail customers while using single drivers as well as two-person driver teams over long-haul routes, with each trailer containing only one customer goods. This origin-to-destination freight movement limits intermediate handling and is not dependent on the same network of locations utilized by LTL carriers. On average, Con-way Truckload transports shipments more than 800 miles from origin to destination. Under its regional service offering, Con-way Truckload transports truckload shipments of less than 600 miles, including local-area service for truckload shipments of less than 100 miles.

Con-way Truckload offers through-trailer service into and out of Mexico through all major gateways in Texas, Arizona and California. For a shipment with an origin or destination in Mexico, Con-way Truckload provides transportation for the domestic portion of the freight move, and a Mexican carrier provides the pick-up, linehaul and delivery services within Mexico. At December 31, 2011, Con-way Truckload operated five owned terminals with bulk fuel, tractor and trailer parking, and in some cases, equipment maintenance and washing facilities. In addition, Con-way Truckload also utilizes various drop yards for temporary trailer storage throughout the United States. At December 31, 2011, Con-way Truckload owned and operated approximately 2,700 tractors and 8,000 trailers, including tractors held under capital lease agreements.

! The Other! reporting segment consists of the operating results of Road Systems, a trailer manufacturer, and certain corporate activities for which the related income or expense has not been allocated to other reporting segments, including results related to corporate re-insurance activities and corporate properties. Road Systems primarily manufactures and refurbishes trailers for Con-way Freight and Con-way Truckload.

Wunderlich’s Nicholas Bender thinks FedEx’s results bode well for Old Dominion (ODFL), Con-way (CNW) and Saia (SAIA):

We expect all less-than-truckload carriers to benefit in 2Q14 from the same trends that carried FedEx Freight to a banner 4Q14. This includes Hold-rated Old Dominion, which will continue to grow at well above market rates, and Buy-rated Con-way, which we believe can leverage a strong 2Q14 to prime the pump on margin enhancement efforts. Our favorite name in the space remains Saia (SAIA-$42.92, Buy), which will once again see accelerating tonnage growth in 2Q14. Though tonnage growth will moderate in 2H14 due to steeper comps, there remains considerable potential for the company to boost yield and continue winning incremental business with new accounts.

Navistar hasn't been entirely locked out of the trucking market, though. The company won several contracts from the Defense Department in support of its military vehicles, including its MaxxPro mine-resistant, ambush-protected armored vehicle. On the commercial front, Navistar won part of an order in May from trucking company Con-Way (NYSE: CNW  ) , which purchased 200 ProStar vehicles from the company. Still, the fact that rival Paccar (NASDAQ: PCAR  ) got an even bigger portion of the Con-Way order is just one more sign of the ongoing struggles Navistar faces.

Your Investment Watch List for 2014

It's been a great year for the U.S. stock market. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index is up about 25%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average has climbed 23%.

And Money Morning's gurus have done even better than that for their subscribers this year...

Chief Investment Strategist Keith Fitz-Gerald decoded an 80% gain for readers of his Money Map Report with an insurance company that pays out a super dividend.

Our Defense and Technology Specialist Michael A. Robinson, delivered a 100% gain with a politics-proof defense contractor.

Now it's time to pick the next big winners for 2014. Some of our experts share what they're watching, looking for, or forward to, next time around.

The Good

Here's who's going to have a great 2014:

Two of our favorite tech stocks, Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT), bear close watching next year, according to Money Morning's Capital Wave Strategist Shah Gilani.

"Apple is headed back to $700," he said, on the basis of "new products and business lines that will shock the world." AAPL is trading at $560 per share now.

Meanwhile, Gilani says Microsoft will mount its own challenge to Apple and Google - and emerge from the fight "bigger, stronger, and more growth-oriented."

2013 was a rough year for the equity markets in the emerging economies of Asia and Latin America. Although gross domestic product (GDP) growth was 4.5% in those markets, share price indexes for Asia were only up 1.7%, and down 8.7% for Latin America, according to research firm Yardeni.

Next year, things will start to look up, at least for one of the big emerging economies.

"2014 is going to be all about Brazil: economically, politically, athletically," said Gilani. "If Brazil can rise to the many challenges it faces, its stock market will soar."

Brazil will host the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympics in Rio da Janeiro, both events that will tax the country's infrastructure.

And speaking of soaring, this famed investor is poised to have a massively profitable 2014...

"Billionaire private equity investor Stephen Schwartzman will make still more billions as his fund Blackstone IPOs more of its portfolio companies." Blackstone took Hilton Hotels public in 2013, and it has plenty more companies in its portfolio. The Fed(s)

In the U.S., 2013 market activity seems to have revolved around one question: What's the Fed going to do?

The Open Market Committee answered that question - taper starts in January - but that doesn't mean the Fed has become irrelevant.

Far from it. The Federal Reserve and the federal government - "the Feds" plural - will only increase in importance.

One thing our experts absolutely agree is a must-watch for next year is the Federal Reserve Bank and its incoming Chairman, Janet Yellen.

"There is no stock, no investment, no person more important to watch than Janet Yellen and the rest of the central bankers," said Money Morning's Chief Investment Strategist Keith Fitz-Gerald. "The central bankers will take their cue from Yellen, which will set the tone for every asset class in the world."

And speaking of politics and money, our Global Investing & Income Strategist Robert Hsu predicts we'll "See a lot more class warfare in the United States next year, thanks to the Congressional mid-term elections in November."

But there is more to money and banking than is dreamt of by Treasury secretaries and central bankers. And that's why Money Morning's Global Income Specialist Robert Hsu is watching China's shadow banking system.

"There's probably going to be at least one default in China's underground credit system," he warned.

And The Tech-y

This year was great for technology, with the tech-heavy NASDAQ Composite Index up 33% - higher than the Standard & Poor's 500's 25%.

And 2014 will be no different.

"Americans love technology and the country is continuing to embrace new developments, products and innovations," said Money Morning's Defense & Technology specialist Michael Robinson. "The big money makers are going to be in cloud computing and biotechnology."

3D printing really got noticed in 2013, Robinson said, which means that the industry will only increase its momentum in the New Year. "We're talking about an industry with a compound growth rate of 25% per year. 3D printing is going to be everywhere."

But it's not all business...

Here at Money Morning we love keeping you abreast of the news you can profit from. And we have a good time doing it. (Besides, sometimes a good time is also a good investment.)

But even we like to kick back with a great TV series or movie, and 2014 is looking to be a bang-up year for entertainment.

The year 2013 brought the untimely end of beloved chemistry teacher-turned-drug kingpin Walter White. People distraught over the end of AMC's hit series Breaking Bad will rejoice, says Robert Hsu, as the spin-off and prequel Better Call Saul becomes the most anticipated TV show in years.

Perhaps most importantly, the long wait for the second Avengers installment comes out next year, too. Robert tells us that the new movie's villain, Thanos, "will move out of comic book obscurity and into the mainstream."

5 Best Logistics Stocks To Own For 2014

Hey McDonald's Corporation (NYSE:MCD) and Yum! Brands, Inc. (NYSE:YUM), the reason you're struggling isn't likely the reason you think. Yes, McDonald's, you have logistics problems, and Yum! Brands [purveyor of Pizza Hut, KFC, and Taco Bell], offering an alternative to burgers to a burger-lovin' world doesn't always make life easy. That's not your biggest hurdle, however. You're biggest hurdle is much more nuanced, admittedly a little obscure, and multiple in number. Winning and keeping market share can be done though. As proof that it can be done, one only has to look at Giggles N Hugs Inc. (OTCMKTS:GIGL), which is actually growing by giving kids AND parents what both of them REALLY want.

In an informal survey performed by parenting-trials website in September of this year, parents opined about what they wanted/needed from a kid-friendly restaurant. Price and speed didn't make the list, even though the entire fast-food industry was and still is built for the primary purpose of serving up cheap food in a hurry... a mindset put into motion by McDonald's years ago. The biggest concerns of parents who dared to drag their kids to an eatery were (1) a patient, understanding staff, (2) a menu with a choice, (3) kid-sized accoutrements, and (4) entertainment.

I actually spoke with Mr. Tim Matula, who is a former director and also handled investor relations for Diamond Ranch Foods (the predecessor company). Mr. Matula is also a long-time director at Nuvilex (NVLX.PK), which I recently suggested is an overly promoted stock exhibiting several of the signs about which FINRA has been warning investors (more on this later). Matula answered the phone number included on recent press releases by PLPL - I was expecting to hear an answering machine, as my call was in the late evening. He explained that he was no longer involved with the company due to having too many time-constraints. He also explained his sale of 4.9mm shares back to the company at $0.025 on February 7th, suggesting an open market sale would have been impossible. Note that PLPL has never traded below $0.04, so I found this curious. It was Matula who passed me along to Shane Traveller. He also told me that he is the brother of Tom Matula, the Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board (more later).

    Sea change
As with many industries, tax prep is witnessing a period of technological disruption in the form of Web-based software. Intuit (NASDAQ: INTU  ) is the leader in the space with its Turbo Tax product. Lesser-known Blucora (NASDAQ: BCOR  ) has its hand in the game as well with TaxACT. The latter is a small but healthy business. TaxACT maintains strong margins and grows at roughly 8% to 10% annually. Currently, the company maintains around 12% of online tax-prep market share.

But then, H&R Block ran into trouble with its software. The IRS said that a limited number of software company products failed to provide for the correct treatment of the American Opportunity educational tax credit, forcing an estimated 660,000 taxpayers to have to wait an additional six weeks for their refunds, and H&R Block had been informing its customers about the problems. Intuit (NASDAQ: INTU  ) already has a commanding lead over H&R Block with Intuit's TurboTax software, so H&R Block's slip-up likely didn't add much to Intuit's dominance. But even Blucora's (NASDAQ: BCOR  ) TaxAct software might well benefit from the issue, forcing H&R Block to rely even more on its bricks-and-mortar stores in order to keep its sales up.

This year has been one of big deals and big rumors for Embraer. Just a few days ago, the company announced a deal with American International Group's (NYSE: AIG  ) airplane leasing subsidiary for at least 50 jets and potentially up to 100, beginning in 2018. It's a multibillion-dollar deal that could be worth more than Embraer's entire trailing-12-month revenue stream. Embraer also has a deal with Republic Airways (NASDAQ: RJET  ) for at least 47 E-175 jets -- the first of which should be delivered around this time of year -- and potentially 47 more if the airline likes what it sees. Several major carriers are also looking to expand their fleet of regional jets, which is Embraer's specialty and thus also its great opportunity. SkyWest (NASDAQ: SKYW  ) is also committed to buying 40 of the E-175sand could buy up to 140. Between these three deals, Embraer's backlog should swell considerably.
