Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Grgurich]

JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM  ) ended the week down 0.2% on reports of a large looming payout to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and general market nervousness in the face of next week's busy economic calendar.

  • [By Jessica Alling]

Both of the Dow bank component stocks are down this morning, with Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) and JPMorgan (NYSE: JPM  ) down more than 1% so far in trading. Though the losses may not be tied directly to this morning's sales report, housing data has been extremely important for bank investors lately. JPMorgan is the second-largest mortgage originator in the country, and B of A has been fervently trying to gain more ground in the market, so a decline in potential sales (read: loans) is a problem for the banks, which rely on interest revenue heavily.

Top 5 Gas Utility Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Top 5 Gas Utility Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Eastman Chemical Company (EMN)

Eastman Chemical Company, a chemical company, engages in the manufacture and sale of chemicals, plastics, and fibers in the United States and internationally. The company operates in four segments: Coatings, Adhesives, Specialty Polymers, and Inks (CASPI); Fibers; Performance Chemicals and Intermediates (PCI); and Specialty Plastics. The CASPI segment manufactures resins, specialty polymers, and solvents that are used in the production of paints and coatings, inks, adhesives, and other formulated products. The Fibers segment offers Estron acetate tow and Estrobond triacetin plasticizers used in cigarette filters; Estron natural and Chromspun solution-dyed acetate yarns for use in apparel, home furnishings, and industrial fabrics; and cellulose acetate flake and acetyl raw materials for acetate fiber producers. The PCI segment offers intermediates; performance chemicals; and complex organic molecules, such as diketene derivatives, specialty ketones, and specialty anhydrides for medical, pharmaceutical, fiber, and food and beverage ingredients, which are used in specialty market applications. This segment?s products are used in various markets and end uses, including agriculture, transportation, beverages, nutrition, pharmaceuticals, coatings, medical devices, toys, adhesives, household products, polymers, textiles, and consumer and industrial products, as well as used for health and wellness uses. The Specialty Plastics segment primarily offers engineering and specialty polymers, specialty film and sheet products, and packaging film and fiber products. This segment?s products include specialty copolyesters and cellulosic plastics, which are used in specialty packaging, in-store fixtures and displays, consumer and durable goods, medical goods, personal care and consumer packaging, photographic film, optical film, fibers! /nonwovens, tapes/labels, and LCD?s. The company was founded in 1920 and is headquartered in Kingsport, Tennessee.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Victor Selva] e exception. The firm has made an emphasis on its acetate tow production, mainly used for cigarettes. The company stands out for using coal as its input, in contrast with other competitors using petroleum and gas, both more expensive for production. This mark up has allowed Eastman to transfer some of its increasing costs onto prices,  without compromising its sales revenue.

In addition to this, the acquisition of Solutia Inc. (former global leader in performance materials) completed on July 2, 2012, broadened Eastman's specialty chemicals output by adding automotive and solar end products to its portfolio.

Although Eastman is a highly diversified company, it has proven to be severely affected by negative cycles of the economy. Even though this feature is not appealing whatsoever to investments, it certainly has caused it to become a cheap alternative. And, a quite promising one, since the economic recovery boosted its revenue, as a result of Eastman's focus on cost-advantage production methods.

Other specialty chemical competitors, such as Ashland Incorporated (ASH) didn't show such a promising comeback, and the drop in revenue during 2012 was anticipated by investor Jean-Marie Eveillard (Trades, Portfolio), who sold out his 3.9 million share position by the third quarter of that year.

Another industry giant, Huntsman Corporation (HUN) did show more promising results, and less volatile revenues during these last years. This, of course, has led to a high price to earnings ratio discouraging investors as we see later.

    Geographically Diversified

On 2012, almost 50% of Eastman sales were generated in North America, while more than 25% were in Asia and 20% in Europe, Middle East and Africa. This diversification is to be taken into account since it guaran! tees long! -term revenue, even if cigarette consumption decreases in some specific region (for instance, American sales declined  in recent years),

  • [By Michael A. Robinson]

Today, Eastman Chemical Company (NYSE: EMN) ranks as an industry leader with a $12 billion market cap and whose stock is up 350% over the past five years, not counting the 1.5% dividend.

  • [By Lauren Pollock]

Eastman Chemical Co.'s(EMN) third-quarter earnings surged as the diversified chemical and materials producer reported sales growth as well as fewer charges related to its acquisition of Solutia Inc. last year. But it lowered its earnings estimate for the year on expectations it will continue to face challenges in its adhesives and plasticizers business, as well as higher raw-materials and energy costs. Shares dropped.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Hilary Kramer]

    2. Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) The REIT is another alternative vehicle that's gone mainstream in recent years. Hundreds of broad-based and specialized real estate companies and ETFs are available, and after a correction a few months ago, many are on the cheap side. Like any other alternative, this should be a seasoning for your portfolio and not the sauce itself. For most retail investors, a stake in an indexed fund like the SPDR Dow Jones REIT (NYSE: RWR) should be more than adequate, or look into the companies that provide services to the REIT industry like HFF (NYSE: HF) and Jones Lang LaSalle (NYSE: JLL).

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By David Hanson]

    7. Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFM  ) Whole Foods Market is often jokingly labeled "Whole Paycheck" because of its steeper-than-average grocery prices. Similarly, the company's stock price also sports a high price tag. Despite trading over 10% lower than its all-time high, the stock still trades at almost 34 times trailing earnings. The grocer's fiercely loyal customer base and brand power are not compelling enough for Buffett to pay up for shares of the leader in a historically low-margin industry.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 wireless telecom player that's starting to move within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Partner Communications (PTNR), a telecommunications company, provides cellular and fixed-line telecommunication services in Israel. This stock is off to a strong start in 2013, with shares up sharply by 29%.

If you take a look at the chart for Partner Communications, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways for the last month, with shares moving between $7.28 on the downside and $7.96 on the upside. Shares of PTRN are bucking the overall market weakness today as the stock starts to move within range of triggering a breakout trade above the upper-end of its sideways trading chart pattern.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in PTNR if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $7.80 to $7.85 a share and then once it clears its 52-week high at $7.96 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that registers near or above its three-month average volume of 107,303 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then PTNR will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $10 to $12.20 a share.

Traders can look to buy PTNR off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $7.38 to $7.28, or below its 50-day at $6.97 a share. One can also buy PTNR off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Top Performing Stocks To Invest In 2015

As 2014 draws to a close, it will be remembered as an absolutely awful year for the offshore drilling industry. As we see in the chart below, the best performing offshore drilling stock is off 44% from its 52-week high, while others have fallen even farther.

SDRL data by YCharts

Here's why the industry imploded in 2014.

Early warning signs
Transocean LTD (NYSE: RIG  ) was the first to warn investors that 2014 could be a rough year for the offshore drilling industry. The company pointed out at an industry conference that it had 14 rigs coming off of contract in 2014 that didn't have new contracts lined up. Industrywide, a total of 39 rigs were expected to come off of contracts in 2014 at a time when a number of newbuild rigs were hitting the open seas. The reason so many rigs were without a contract had to do with the fact that oil companies were struggling to generate a lot of free cash flow even though oil prices were well over $100 per barrel as high costs were cutting deeply into the cash flow of oil companies. Because of this, oil companies were cutting back on deepwater drilling until either oil prices went higher or dayrates for drilling rigs started heading lower.

With nothing more than a passing glance at Royale Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROYL), it would be easy to dismiss it as just another volatile small caps... one of many small cap stocks that gets a little squirrelly every now and then. The longer you study the chart of ROYL, however, the clearer it becomes... this chart looks like it's coming out of a slightly bearish lull and working its way into an uptrends.

    A mixed quarter
These shortfalls did not occur in a quarter in which the services group has languished and generally disappointed at earnings time. Indeed, the figurative chieftain of the group, Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) , reported precisely a week earlier that it not only had topped the forecasts of the Wall Street seers, but in fact had also outdone the prior year's results. Baker Hughes (NYSE: BHI  ) didn't accomplish the latter feat, but it topped the analysts' prognostications and even managed to radiate an air of optimism about the North American onshore picture, recently the bane of the group's existence.

Top 5 Supermarket Companies To Watch In Right Now

Safeway (NYSE: SWY  ) is leaving the Canadian market.

On Wednesday, the American supermarket chain announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to sell its Canadian operations towholly owned Empire Company Limited subsidiary Sobeys, a Canadian food retailer, for $5.7 billion. Sobeys will also take on "certain liabilities" as part of its purchase.

Safeway CEO Robert Edwards characterized the sale as motivated by a desire to take advantage of "the higher multiples attributed to Canadian supermarket companies" as compared with U.S. supermarket chains. Edwards noted that the net proceeds from this sale after taxes and expenses -- just under $4 billion -- will be used to pay down some of Safeway's debt and to buy back stock.

Safeway currently has about $6.2 billion in debt on its books (against $357 million in cash). It has more than 237 million shares outstanding, which, at $23.11 apiece, adds up to a market cap of $5.5 billion -- a market cap, though, that is rapidly climbing in the wake of positive investor reaction to news of the sale.

    Leading and Lagging Sectors
Wednesday morning, the healthcare sector proved to be a source of strength for the market. Leading the sector was strength from Horizon Pharma (NASDAQ: HZNP) and Pernix Therapeutics Holdings (NASDAQ: PTX). In trading on Wednesday, telecommunications services shares were relative laggards, down on the day by about 0.39 percent. Top decliners in the sector included Shenandoah Telecommunications Co (NASDAQ: SHEN), off 3.3 percent, and CalAmp (NASDAQ: CAMP), down around 2.4 percent.

Since the start of 2014, small cap pharmaceutical stocksAchillion Pharmaceuticals, Inc (NASDAQ: ACHN), Pernix Therapeutics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ: PTX) and Amicus Therapeutics, Inc (NASDAQ: FOLD)are up 286.3%, 262.3% and 248.1%, respectively, making them some of the best performing pharmaceutical stocks for the year. However, a one year share performance, especially for anything in the volatile biotech or pharmaceutical sector, could be just a one time fluke. With that in mind, here is what you need to know or be warned about all three small cap pharmaceutical stocks:

  • [By Michael Douglass and David Williamson]

Shares ofPernix Therapeutics (NASDAQ: PTX  ) soared 31% yesterday after the company revealed that it had bought the U.S. rights toGlaxoSmithKline's (NYSE: GSK  ) Treximet (which helps treat migraines in adults) for $250 million upfront (and some potential additional payments later). The importance of this purchase cannot easily be overstate for Pernix -- the company had $85 million in revenue last year, while Treximet on its own brought in $79 million -- and Pernix clearly sees some additional upside potential for the drug, whether it's through a potential indication expansion (to pediatric patients) or through synergies with Pernix's current salesforce.
