Top 10 Cheap Stocks To Own Right Now

Earlier this week, my Foolish colleague Tyler Crowe penned a smart piece about how "We Will Never See Cheap Oil Again." Though I agree with many of the points Tyler makes, I disagree with his main thesis. It's certainly possible for the bottom to fall out of the oil market, and history gives us some context for understanding this.

You can't always get what you want
It's true that the U.S., Russia, and Saudi Arabia all need high oil prices. As Tyler wrote, the advancements in U.S. drilling techniques mean that the cost of producing a barrel of oil necessitates selling it for a minimum of $55 to $80 per barrel, depending on where in the States it's produced. Russia and Saudi Arabia both depend on revenue from oil production to fund their respective governments, with per-barrel prices ranging from $80 to $120, depending on whom you ask. As the top three producers in the world, the thinking goes, they will manipulate production to do what it takes to keep oil prices high.

SIRI has seen steady gains since September 2010, and the company continues to put out new and exciting channels for its satellite radio such as the latest one, Studio 54.Regardless, some investors hav e expressed caution regarding the company. This article, also from Seeking Alpha, brings up some great points that are certainly worth mentioning. In many ways, Sirius XM has not taken full advantage of traditional Internet or the mobile market.Even some users of the company’s technology readily admit that its Internet and mobile services aren’t great. Sirius’s use of advertising and reaching out to certain demographics has also been lacking. Despite all these important points though, the fact remains that competition in the radio industry is quite weak. Net income for Sirius’s most serious (no pun intended) competitor Pandora (P) has been negative for 2 straight quarters now. SIRI also beats P in some other statistics. Gross margin and operating margin for SIRI are both about 20 percentage points higher. Additionally, price to sale ratio for P is a whopping 11.69, while SIRI’s is a much more reasonable 2.39. While more traditional radio broadcasters like Cumuls Media (CMLS) and Westwood One (WWON) have the best price to sale ratios (0.43 and 0.37 respectively), it is quite clear that these companies are a dying breed.

Satellite radio broadcaster Sirius XM Radio Inc. (SIRI) is popular among penny stock investors. At $1.83, SIRI is up 67% in the last year, and 20% since mid-January. Investors should also note the company's quarterly revenue growth of 9% from last quarter.

  • [By Michael Brush]

Howard Stern lemmings piled into Sirius stock years ago when the shock jock moved his circus to satellite radio. Many lost almost all their money, as the company's stock fell under $1 from above $8.

But with a 2008 buyout of XM Radio and a bankruptcy scare under its belt, Sirius XM Radio (SIRIis now a dominant force on the comeback trail.

Skeptics believe iPods and free Web radio services like Pandora will jam the signal at Sirius, which charges $12.95 a month. But satellite radio offers content that listeners can't find elsewhere on the radio -- not only Stern, but also Martha Stewart, Oprah Winfrey, Jamie Foxx, Barbara Walters and a Playboy channel, to name a few.

And recent trends confirm that drivers are willing to pay for that content. Sirius XM Radio's subscriber base grew last year by 8%, to 20.2 million. That helped drive revenue up 14%, to $2.82 billion. "It's kind of like the original cable TV, when everyone thought people wouldn't pay for TV because it's free," says Robert Routh, a media analyst at Phoenix Partners. "Sirius XM Radio has lot of stuff you can't get elsewhere." The reason: While terrestrial radio companies lack the funds to buy the big talent, Sirius XM Radio can buy whatever it wants to fill its 135 channels, says John Tinker, an analyst with Maxim Group.

Two other keys to growth: Sirius XM Radio is available for free for a few months in 60% of all new cars. As car sales rise in an improving economy, subscriber growth should increase. A Sirius 2.0 upgrade and a possible rate increase later this year will also drive gains. All-important cash flow could hit $1 billion a year by 2015, predicts Morgan Stanley analyst David Gober. He says Sirius XM Radio will be announcing dividends and share buybacks -- music to investors' ears.

Oracle. This software service giant, which deals in a slew of databases, applications, product support, and other services, has also made some smart acquisitions, Resendes says. "The companies they've acquired--PeopleSoft, BEA, and Seibold--really round out the product line." What's more, Oracle's database business has been steadily gaining market share, he says, which is "a positive sign because they're starting to eat up competitors." Oracle's stock, recently $18, is trading slightly below what it was a year ago. Resendes thinks that share price could rise 25 percent.

Advisors' Opinion:

Shares are trading around $51.50 at the time of writing, as against their 52-week trading range of $45.97 to $64.17. At the current market price, the company is capitalized at $21.64 billion. Earnings per share for the last year were $5.29, placing the shares on a price to earnings ratio of 9.77. It paid a dividend of $1.64 (a yield of 3.20%).

Still in the memory is the financial crisis of 2008, and the mess that insurance companies like AIG managed to get themselves into. Travelers avoided that, but investors are fickle creatures and sometimes look at the short term rather than the long term. Travelers are well managed with good prospects going forward. Operating margins of nearly 13% hold well against rivals Hartford Financial Services Group (HIG) at around 10% and W.R. Berkley Corporation (WRB) at a shade under 14%. Good management should keep gross margins healthy (currently 26.5% versus Hartford’s 30% and W.R. Berkely’s 18%), and the company’s ongoing policy of share repurchases and dividend payout should continue to add value to shareholders. A good buy.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Chris Stuart]

Partner Communications(PTNR) is Israel's second-largest wireless operator, but is facing fierce competition in the industry. Recent regulatory changes in the cellular market are also a major headwind for the company. The government has implemented a massive 76% cut in interconnection fees (the charges by mobile-phone operators when connecting users between networks) and lower exit penalties. The company has warned that free cash flow will likely be significantly hurt over coming quarters.

So what's there to like here? Israeli analysts at Bank Leumi believe the selloff has been overdone, saying "the market has overshot to the downside by pricing in an unreasonably pessimistic outcome to the changes in the industry."

The stock currently pays a 7.3% dividend, but that could change, given the downward pressure on cash flow. Consider this a high-risk, high-reward investment. TheStreet Ratings has a $19 price target on Partner Communications.

The addition of five new clients added $10 million to the company’s sales in the quarter. SMTX’s year-over-year gross profit more than doubled to $7.9 million, as a result. Generated cash flow reached $4.6 million and the company used much of this extra cash to pay down debt. That’s why SMTX’s debt was just $18 million at the end of the quarter, the lowest level in the company’s history.

SMTX is in an excellent position to profit from increasing electronics and technology demand, which will continue to climb next year. Buy SMTX below $4.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Larry Gellar]

Similar to Archer Daniels Midland above, Emerson Electric saw 52-week highs in February but has been down since to a current price of below $50. From a valuation perspective, Emerson is quite attractive – notably P/E and PEG are 15.55 and 0.99 respectively. This is lower than competitors like ABB (ABB) and Hitachi (HIT), and Emerson’s margins are also better than those companies. Specifically, Emerson currently has a gross margin of 39.58% and an operating margin of 17.04%. Aside from the companies listed above, this also beats out General Electric (GE), which has 36.79% and 11.15% for those same numbers respectively. On the other hand, there are also some concerns to be had with EMR. Total cash flow for the past 3 quarters has been a whopping negative $1.8 billion. Shareholders have also been wary of the company’s willingness to take on additional debt. Upcoming earnings for EMR have already been guided downward, and it seems likely that the stock price will fall once the actual results are posted. The wisest thing may be to wait for the stock to bottom out after earnings and then buy it before it creeps back upward. Some investors may find EMR attractive for its dividends; yield is currently at 2.8%.
