Top Integrated Utility Stocks To Watch For 2014

The turmoil in long-term care insurance continues. In recent years a number of insurers raised premiums substantially on existing policies or exited the market. A year ago it appeared things would stabilize after the shakeout, but a new round of premium hikes and policy changes is taking place.

Two of the largest and most stable LTCI carriers, John Hancock, a subsidiary of Manulife Financial, and Genworth are seeking hefty premium increases on existing policies. Hancock sought premium increases of about 40% a few years ago and now is seeking an average 25% increase on top of that. Genworth is seeking lower increases generally but is asking for significant increases on policies sold before 2002. Genworth has 23% of the market while Hancock has 16%. Other insurers are making adjustments to terms of new policies or stopping the sale of some policies. Industry analysts expect this won’t be the end of premium increases or other policy changes.

DRII stock hit the market just last year at $16.15 and now trades above $20. Only 3 analysts follow it, and earnings estimates aren spectacular. FY14 earnings are expected to be 92 cents, down from 96 in FY13 — but they’re also supposed to rise to $1.06 in FY15. The problem with Diamond is its debt structure. It paid $88 million on its $414 million in long-term debt last year. If it gets its interest payments refinanced, it worth a look because revenue growth is strong.

    Interval Leisure Group (IILG)

Interval Leisure Group (IILG) feels to me like it has been bought and sold many times, probably because it one of the oldest timeshare stocks, founded in 1976. Its 2,900 resorts are spread across 16 nations, with more than 2 million owners. It also diversifies its revenue stream by selling ownerships, and by managing and renting properties. Virtually ever major hotel chain is partnered with it.

It also remains worthwhile to hedge stock allocations to protect against any major downside event along the way. This includes positions with low correlations such as the PIMCO Total Return ETF (BOND) or the PIMCO Global Advantage Inflation Linked Bond ETF (ILB). This also includes allocations that are likely to rally sharply in the event of a stock pullback but can also continue to rise along with the market such as long-term Treasuries (TLT) or Build America Bonds (BAB). And despite the recent thrashing they have endured, the precious metals complex including gold (GLD), silver (SLV), platinum (PPLT) and palladium (PALL) continue to provide attractive long-term portfolio diversification benefits. I remain long all of these metals via the Central GoldTrust (GTU), the Central Fund of America (CEF), the Sprott Physical Silver Trust (PSLV) and the Sprott Physical Platinum and Palladium Trust (SPPP).
